Getting that gorgeous snap of the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum in Rome, or of that stunning waterfall by the hot springs, is the epitome of travel photography; epic photos is what we all aim for!
But capturing the beauty that is in front of you can be a bit difficult; the shot may look fantastic in the preview, but as soon as that shutter clicks, you end up with tons of shadows which completely corrupt your photo.
These shadows occur from objects in the background, from people within the shot (or standing just outside the frame), and even from your own photography skills if you haven’t quite mastered your lighting.
While you can always use Photoshop to remove unnecessary shadows (see how to remove shadows from photos in Photoshop), if your subscription has ended or you don’t want the learning curve, there’s a powerful new program called PhotoWorks.
While the program itself has a great guide for how to remove shadows from photos in PhotoWorks, we’ve summarized the process here in 4 easy steps, to show you how simple it is!
Just think: no more annoying shadows!
The Best Way to Remove Shadows From Travel Photos in 4 Easy Steps!
Removing Shadows with PhotoWorks
Dark and unwanted shadows will pop up all the time, regardless of your skill level as a photographer. You could get dark patches from people, shadows on the ground from objects, or even make an error in positioning and get shadows from the sun.
Shooting in natural light can be extremely difficult as you have to balance lighting, color, and movement (tourist spots, anyone?!). So, how to get rid of shadows in pictures if you are unable to avoid them?
All you need PhotoWorks – downloading the program is the first step, so there are actually only 3 editing steps!
Step One: Download It!
Head over to PhotoWorks and download the free trial version. For those who are worried about space, the program only takes up 142MB, so it’s incredibly small!
When you click the download button, wait for it to download in your browser, then launch the file and follow the instructions to install. Once installed, open up the program and open up the image that has those unsavory shadows.
Step Two: Retouch It
With your photo open, take a look at the top of the program window. You will see five tabs, one of which will say “Retouch”.
Click on this and pick the Healing Brush from the right-hand side menu. The Healing Brush is used to remove blemishes, imperfections, and shadows. This is how to remove shadows from pictures with PhotoWorks.
Step Three: Paint Over It
Once you have the Healing Brush option selected, you will be presented with a few options. You will need to adjust the size of the brush before editing the image.
The smaller you make the brush, the more exact the changes will be, whereas, the larger it is, the more “sweeping” the changes will be. You can also play around with the “feather” and “opacity” settings, as these will soften up the edges of the Healing Brush’s effect.
You’ll need a delicate and steady hand to paint over the shadow you want to remove. And don’t forget to apply your changes!
Step Four: Compare It
Now that you’ve removed the shadow, you can use PhotoWork’s before and after feature to compare the original with your edit.
If you aren’t satisfied, go back in and continue the editing work. If you are happy, it the save button.

Removing Shadows Doesn’t Have to be Difficult!
One of the difficulties associated with removing shadows from photos is coming away with an image that doesn’t look unnatural or like it is missing an element.
This can be the case if you remove a shadow in the wrong way or don’t quite edit it all out. When using an automatic photo editor, the editing process becomes a lot simpler, as you just need to know what you don’t want in the image and let the tool do the rest of the work.
For beginners, using an intelligent and content-aware photo improvement program like PhotoWorks, removes the guesswork and makes the shadow removal extremely easy.
Plus, there isn’t really any learning involved with the program, as its user-friendly interface is self-explanatory and it comes with free learning resources.
And, the trial is free!
