Today’s Free Apps for Turning Your Road Trip Hell Into Highway Heaven

Road trips are often a fun thing to look forward to: time spent on the open road by yourself — or with your friends, seeing placing you’ve never seen before. They can also be a nightmare to plan if you don’t have the right tools.

Fortunately, there are plenty of apps you can download on your mobile devices that can help you make your next road trip go as smoothly as possible. Developers have created everything from trip planners to weather apps to traffic apps and more to help you get where you are going as quickly as you want with as much information at your disposal as possible.

Here are some of the better apps you should look into downloading before you next road trip.

Weather Live Free

In considering the time of year, climate and weather is also something you should pay close attention to.

This weather app from Apalon Apps has everything you and your friends will need to stay ahead of the weather, no matter what your destination.

This free app boasts all of the essential weather-tracking information: it has the current temperature, wind speed and direction, precipitation and pressure and the time of both the sunrise and sunset. The app also has an up-to-the-minute weather radar, so you can know if any fronts will be moving in or out of your area.

The best feature of the app, though, is the built-in widget for your homescreen. With it, you don’t even need to open the app to get all of the information you need. It’s customizable as well, so you can have as much or as little information as you want.

Roadtrippers

The US was made for iconic roadtrips. Anyone with a car can go anywhere, and the nice thing about this mode of transportation is that the journey is the destination in itself – a road trip is an adventure!

Roadtrippers is a route-planning app that lets you plan your trip in different ways. If you want, you can look at the built-in map and plan your own route to your destination.

The fun part of the app, however, are the pre-made trips that have been made by other users. If you are traveling cross country, for instance, you can use the Route 66 map that will tell you where to stay and what sights are worth seeing.

There are also maps that give you “weird” road trips and other that show you great sights along your journey. If you’re just looking to get away, pick a random trip and let the app take you there!

Waze

Waze is one of the best and most popular traffic apps out there. It utilizes crowdsourcing to give you real-time updates on road conditions anywhere in the United States.

The app works by having its users report on conditions in their area. Users can report traffic jams, accidents, constructions zones and even gas prices. Waze also gives you an estimated time of arrival for all of your trips and can offer alternative routes if you are coming up on road problems.

You can also find information on local businesses like hotels and restaurants, so you will always know where to stop during the course of your journey.

Before heading out on your next road trip, check out these apps and make it a little easier.
