Traveling the world may sound glamorous, and many moments are indeed. However let’s not pretend that there aren’t just as many moments where you begin questioning whether all the headaches are worth it!
With every year that passes it seems travel, especially international travel, is becoming more hectic and increasingly difficult to bear. From standing in lines that rival a Disney ride, to being seated beside passengers you wouldn’t wish upon your worst enemy, the physical act of travel is chaotic, and I lust over the experience of first class.
My favorite music / movie transports me away from my surroundings each time. However airline headphones don’t exactly block out the noise. My last flight I was seated in a row with not one, or even two, but three crying infants and a man which had to be going for a Guinness World Record of loudest snorer.
Already suffering from a headache I disobeyed the fasten seat belt sign as I made a quick grab of my headphones from the overhead luggage. After two or three minutes channeling my inner scout to untie a sequence of knots, I did find some reprieve, though had to wonder when Lorde had added young crying backup singers to her tracks.
Block Out the Noise
I long for the day when I win the lottery and can fly First Class indefinitely however I am somewhat reluctant to purchase the higher priced ticket for now in the fear I could never go back to the mortal cabin.
It’s amazing how far the little extras associated with First Class can go to providing you with a more enjoyable experience. And when you exit you get a glimpse of all those fancy additions they are given, like compression socks, slippers, pajamas, and those seemingly much more high tech headphones. Upon seeing them on my last flight I was jealous enough that I finally looked into replacing my free tangled mess given to me by the flight attendant.
I came across Sennheiser’s PXC 550 Wireless noise cancelling headphones. A German based company that specialises in premium audio products, there are headphones, and then there are these.
- Sennheiser’s PXC 550 Wireless noise cancelling headphones.
Sennheiser’s PXC 550 Wireless
Wireless headphones are tricky in that very rarely can you find a set that reproduces incredible sound while providing top of the line noise cancellation and long battery life. But this is exactly what Sennheiser achieves. Add extreme comfort and a lightweight design and you have a gold standard resting upon your ears.
The PXC 550 Wireless is truly a machine in it’s own right. A touch control panel is integrated into the earcups, which gives you complete control on the move. With the swipe of a finger, you have a convenient selection of settings, from volume control, to skipping a track, to taking a call.
An in terms of taking a call, the PXC 550 Wireless offers unrivaled speech clarity. It identifies and filters out all ambient noise and makes sure you will be perfectly understood at the other end of the line, no matter how busy your environment, or how many crying children in front of you!
And with a multiple microphone design feature, it allows you to hear your own voice so you’re not of those annoying people screaming into the phone or laptop in the airport lounge.
Remarkable Battery Life
Being based in Australia, any international flight is a minimum of 8 hours. At least. So if I was investing in a top-of-the-line pair of headphones, it needed to have a remarkable battery life.
The PXC 550 Wireless is impressive, and seamlessly anticipates your needs by powering on as you unfold it, automatically pausing your track when you remove it, and switching off when you fold it away. So you don’t have to worry about forgetting to turn them off.
That said, with a battery which lasts up to 30 hours of continuous use, this means they outlast the longest of any international flight, and you can span the globe on a single charge without leaving your private audio lounge.
My Private Audio Lounge
Sound Quality
I was amazed at the difference in sound quality offered and wondered how I ever got by listening on cheap headphones. I am still blown away by the NoiseGard adaptive noise cancellation as it is truly a surreal experience. It literally erases all outside noise to the point I cannot hear a thing even when nothing is being played.
Wearing these headphones creates your own aural space in even the most chaotic of environments: the louder the noise around you, the stronger it is cancelled, giving you the most comfortable listening experience.
It’s basically like comparing to a 60”+ 4K OLED TV to a small Soniq special from your local discount store. With over 70 years experience, I knew I was getting a trusted brand with Sennheiser, and a product that somehow managed to balance the best aspects of wireless headphones in harmony.
Block Out the Rest of the World
The Verdict
Although First Class flights may not be in my near future I now have a piece of it back in Economy. My Sennheiser headphones have become a carry on necessity for every trip, which is made easy by just how compact and lightweight they store away (the fold-flat collapsible frame enables it to discreetly fold away into the stylish, compact travel case).
They have also become part of my life when not traveling, a great way to drown out noisy neighbors, block out busy cafes when I go to write, and just whenever I want to transport myself away from stress.
I am usually one to recommend cheaper alternatives when it comes to gadgets and tech but what Sennheiser offers is so beyond what any cheap alternative can offer. Sometimes there is no alternative to First Class, and in terms of the best escape money can buy, besides travel itself, these headphones are the next best thing!
Other Products We Recommend for the Plane
In addition to your headphones, face masks are now an essential part of the travel experience. And just like your headphones, while airlines may provide a cheap version, it’s worthwhile investing in a quality product of your own which you know is yours, and you’re comfortable wearing.

OH These look GREAT, we so deserve them after tolerating our headphones from Hanoi.
You cannot spend enough of quality.
I have never heard of this brand. They would have been great on my flight from dc to kuwait
I hope to win in this giveaway
Awesome Giveaway!
I really want a set of these but 600 bucks is a plane ticket so they will have to wait.
The best pair of headphones I followed recently. But the price cannot be achievable to me. It’s great to see a giveaway like this.
THIS is what I need!!
Thanks for this opportunity, Meg! I would love to get my hands on one of these!
I have been needing to upgrade my headphones for ages! I always wanted to get a nice headset like these for long days of travel! Great review, seems like the perfect pair!
I’ve been a Sennheiser addict for years. Would love a new set to drown out commuters and noisy workmates!
The only sound that really needs blocking out is snoring, otherwise it’s loosing yourself in the music, taking you away from the world for a little bit and imagining you are on that beach…and about to travel somewhere exciting..
My husband would do a backflip over these ! We travel a fair bit and he does in particular , back and forth from Sydney to Cuba . Now that is a LONG trip and these would be invaluable! Thanks for the opportunity to win these , fingers crossed xx
I’ve always admired but not yet owned Sennheiser. Maybe this is the time?
These look awesome Meg. Kelli used to have a noise cancelling pair of headphones. God-send for flying. Especially long haul flights. Because those experiences can be maddening when you have a noisy baby or folks onboard who play music out loud, or other silly stuff like that.
We keep breaking our “good” headphones, so we’d love a new, quality pair. These are nice!! :)
Those headphones look amazing!
I do a lot of long haul flights so the Sennheiser would definitely be a great option to add to my travel kit!
These are excellent headphones up there with Sony MDR 1000x and Bose QC35. Love wireless NC headphones for travel.
Essential for blocking out engine noise & other passengers
Gratitude!
I would block out background noise.
These headphones sounds like they are the perfect companion for a long flight or bus ride! I’ve had my fair share of listening to the sleep-depriving sounds of people snoring or having a rather loud conversation nearby. Definitely wished I had a pair of these during those times lol.
I would love to block out the neighbours upstairs :D always putting the dishwasher on at midnight haha
These will help drown out the noise of the political commentators
I wish to block out all the street noise and my neighbors can be loud too!
Borrowed a pair for my last flight.. Will never travel again without a pair.. Cuts out the engine noise amazingly
These sound like amazing headphones. Got a long flight back to SA coming up in a few months!
Very tempting. Esp since I got an iPhone 7. Lost that dongle twice. Looks like a very good headphone I might be needing
This looks essential for those noisy streets around the globe
That looks like a worthy contender in the noise canvelling space, i wonder how it compares to the Bose Quiet Comforts.
You have a great flow of writing, loved it
This is one of the best Bluetooth wireless headphones out there right now, along with Sony MDR-1000x and Bose QC35. Having this definitely will be a great and wise choice. A must! You will be blown away.
This is a great giveaway, thanks for the chance!
Cheers
Awesome I would love to block out street noise
Those look awesome!!! If the sound quality is anywhere near to the Sennheiser HD-25 Plus i used when i was still DJing then whoever wins will be more than happy with them.

Great review. Let’s roll the dice in this giveaway.
I want to block my neighbors music, I’m actually using some SENNHEISER CX 2.00i and even when are old and “budget friendly” sounds great, Sennheiser is a great brand.
These would be great for me because I usually go out to study and with these, I wouldn’t need to raise the music too loud just to drown out ambient noise.
I hope I could win this since I had never tried and get a Senheiser headphones because it so expensive and we are just a middle class family hopefully I can win this. Thank you so much miss Megan and Sennheiser for this event Godbless !!!
I’d love to block out the dog barking! :)
Theses are actually useful for concentration! Thanks for bringing this up!

this headphone is amazing
Would be amazing to win, thanks for the chance :-)
A long time fan of Sennheiser headphones, especially for the replacement warranty on many of its models, but this is quite a bit out of my normal price range unfortunately. Still…one can dream…
Good quality noise cancelling headphones are also great for the daily commute and even to help concentrate in a noisy office environment.
Nice pair

How wonderful is this headphone.
The chatter in the airport when waiting to board! I usually just go with ear plugs but a nice set of headphones would be great.
High quality headphones and it is wireless too. Perfect .
Everyone know sennheiser quality. One of the best in the world.
Noise cancelling headphones are lifechanging! I steal my mother’s pair all the time, hard to fly without em now.
Perfect for travelling with. I’m not a nervous flyer at all but I do find that constant noise hour after hour puts me on edge – would love to block it out without blasting up the volume.
I think the comment on the multiple microphone design feature it allows you to hear your own voice while taking a call so you’re not those annoying people screaming into the phone is incorrect.
I have this headphone and when I take a incoming call and talk I can’t hear my own voice at all. Am I missing something?
Great review ! These seem perfect for long haul flights!!
I would like to block out the noise from the lawn mowers, weedeater and other outdoor tools and just to enjoy the music
I wish to block out noise from cars
I would love to block out all of the distractions while I workout- sometimes people get to me and I get too down on myself!
Anything Sennheiser and I am in.

I good headphones
I can’t sleep while I hear other people talking
Awesome giveaway, finally something very useful for travel- and audio junkies :D!!
I’ve spent way too much on low-quality, high-marketing brands. I’m looking for a great pair to block out all the engine noise on planes and this review is opening my eyes!

I would like to block noisy people in the train (i’m a commuter).
Noise cancelling headphones have been on my wishlist for long :D Def joining this giveaway.
the hum of the fridge, the tick of the clock in the other room. Those tiny repeating irritations
The noise that I would like to block on my headset is the static sound and the noise surrounded me.
Thank you very much for amazing review, it’s very helpful for music lovers specially to the Sennheiser fanatic like me, you give me an idea to learn the best headphone.
I would love to win these headphones. The ones I use are many years old and don’t do the trick on all the buses, planes, and trains we take in our travels. I especially could’ve used them last night in our sleeper bus here in Vietnam with all the incessant honking! Thanks for hosting the contest!
I won’t travel without my noise-canceling head phones. I’ve never tried Sennheiser sounds like I need to. Thanks for the recommendation Meg!
Till recently on flights I would just make do with the airline headphones till the time I got a chance to use noise cancelling ones and it was like a whole new world. However, traveling with kids my last pair was snatched by the little one and now is sadly no more. Sennheiser is a brand I am aware of and respect, they really do understand sound. This looks really cool.
I would love to be able to block out the whine of the fans on my desktop computer. I have to work on my PC but the constant sound can get a little annoying.
Thanks for this awesome giveaway good luck for all
I would love to block the sound of screaming babies on a plane.. that is the WORST.
Music from across the apartment where I live as I live with rent but also outside when I go for a walk and listen some music. People, cars, I just want to admire the nature and relax with great sounds of music.
Thank you for this awesome giveaway and this little beast is look like one of the best in the brand.
I work a lot. And with music. It helps me. It keeps me focused. But I can’t do that always with co-workers screaming and zipping a coffee like there’s no tomorrow. Help!
Outdoor environment noise, there are is a delivery site outside my home and all the trucks sounds like war machines, barely can focus even when closing both the windows and the shutters. Some sweet music with these would make me far more productive every day
I would like to block out everyone on the plane.
Amazing Giveaway!!! Thanks for the opportunity to have such awesome headphone. I really hope to win this one, so I can block all the traffic noises.
Another good choice is Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9, these go for about $230
I would use them to block out the movies and TV shows my wife watches when I want to read or concentrate :)
I would like to block out airplane noise or the noise when mowing.
Awesome. Enjoy reading your content.
My wife sometimes watches really sappy movies which I have no interest in, but she likes me to sit with her while she watches. If I could block that out while I read, I would be very happy.
Awesome Blog and Headphones!
Thanks for this opportunity
Nice review .. keep it up !!
Nice review.
You can’t go wrong with those headphones from Sennheiser but (almost) first class travelling is not for everyone…
Congratulations for the upgrade and thanks for the opportunity.
Won’t you cross the fingers for me too?
Cheers.
Thank you for your honest review! I’m a university student and I often find myself in busy areas of the university, trying to study. Noise cancelling headphones would be perfect for playing instrumental music and blocking out chatter while I study.
Wow! Great description! These sound like a must-have!
At the moment I’d say the most unwanted noise is the construction noise. It can be really disruptive sometimes.
my sister voice, she is constantly singing and i hate it, no she is not bad singer nor is her voice bad, but i am sick of listening it whole day, every day for last 10 years
Please let me win.

I dont want to hear any type of noise from outside. I want to feel away from the world when attached with music.
Oh what a blessing it would be to just hear what you want to hear,,, awesome !!!
Every time I research best Headphones I read about this brand, sadly too expensive for me, maybe this will help, I have a good brand but they are not comfortable, this brand is well known for comfortable headphones.
I think these are the headphones I’ve been looking for. The ability to block out the background noise when I am commuting would be amazing.
Definitely want to block out the airplane rumble.
I’m a “B” Team Mum, I want to block out the kids and get lost in the music like I used to
I could use these to block out people’s noisy children and conversation. I am not chatty at all when I am flying. I just want to listen to my music and tune out everything else.
Great review! A bit pricey, but I want this! Hopefully I’ll get it free when I win. ;-) Good luck to everyone! Thanks for the chance!
I would love to block out my fighting kids..lol
I’d pay the big bucks for some peace and quiet!
Great giveaway! Thanks!
I would love to block out other people’s phone conversations while traveling!
Awesome headphones! Thanks for the chance to win.
What noise do I most want to block out??? All political shows AND Donald Trump’s voice. My Dad watches/listens to politics 8-10 hours a day. At FULL volume. I kid you not. It makes it impossible to study (I’m in my final year of college)…and I don’t know how you feel, but the sound of Trump’s voice makes me feel nauseous. I’ll abstain from writing about my opinion of him, but you can guess how I feel. I would be *SO* happy if I won, because I could study in peace and quiet.
LOL! It’s *SO* nice to know you feel the same way! I swear I feel jealous of people from other countries right now…because at least they don’t have Donald Trump as their leader! And what’s crazy is other countries…on the outside looking in…see what’s going on here is absolutely crazy…but there’s that 30% who wouldn’t care if Donald Trump shot someone in the middle of the street. Believe me, I am *SO* looking forward to the day I am on my own and have complete and total control of the remote! ;)
I seldom fly (weak arms), so I would love to cancel the steady drone of bus engines or train cars on my commutes / travels.
not sure you got my previous comment: I would love to cancel out the steady drone sounds of buses and trains on my commutes and travels.
I would love to block out traffic noise.
The noise I was to block is the static cracking one it can be hard to hear
I would love to stop the noise on planes when I travel! :D
My family watching tv or listening to music on such a high volume
Snoring, the noise that needs to be blocked the most.
When traveling, it’s the crying kid or the dude who is THE LOUD TALKER. Those folks…
I would love to block out other people talking, and the background noise that it creates.
I’d love to use these phones to block out the noise of the TV when my dad’s watching it, he’s hard of hearing and has to make it painfully loud
