Work, save, travel, repeat; for most people, this is the dream.
But what do you do while you’re sitting at home saving?
The following are great, productive ways to pass time when you’re inbetween trips; they’ll allow you to really make the most of your time at home, and help to manage those travel cravings!
Things To Do While Saving For Your Next Adventure
Consider Further Education
Arguably, travel is the best form of education. But, there’s always opportunity for further learning when you’ve got time inbetween trips at home.
Our whole lives revolve around education when we’re young, but we tend to stop once we’ve reached college level. A few of us will move onto to further education, but most will end up getting a job and starting their career.
Further education is something that can be picked up at any point, by anyone, and at any age. And it’s really important that we’re getting a daily dose of education to keep our minds active, keep us engaged with the world around us, and feed that curiosity that ignites the travel bug.
Whether you decide you want to learn how to speak Italian, or finally enroll in your Masters, focus on a topic that really interests you, and that you can potentially see coming in handy when you travel; ie if an advanced degree might assist in scoring a job abroad.
Whatever you choose, whether its a masters in mental health counseling online programs or you’ve decided to learn videography, you can now get online degrees rather than having to physically go to the institution.
This means that you can continue your study, even as you travel, and don’t have to fit your next trip into school holidays!
Get Rid Of Your Debt!
Travel is an incredible life experience, but it’s very common to return having racked up some debt. So while you’re saving for your next trip, make sure that you’re also paying off any debts you returned home with.
It’s crucially important to rid yourself of any bad debt before jetting off somewhere else. It may be frustrating, especially if you’ve got the urge to just book another trip, but if you don’t pay off the money that’s owed, you could end up spiraling into more debt.
You don’t have to be debt free to travel, but if you’re thinking of traveling while in debt the most important thing to consider is if you can actually afford to do it. This means not putting travel on your credit cards, and paying for everything up front, in cash.
If you can’t afford to pay for your trip upfront and still make payments towards your debt, you shouldn’t travel. If you can afford to pay for it with cash, while still having enough for your monthly repayments, then travel away!
Catch Up With Family and Friends
It’s usually pretty difficult to keep up with your social connections while you’re traveling, especially if you enjoy traveling alone. The simple fact is, to continually travel the world you sacrifice the majority of your pre existing relationships.
You may be fortunate enough to have an incredibly close family, and friends who you can go years without speaking to and still maintain a close connection – but the friendship is never the same.
You change in each others absence. You miss milestones and momentous occasions. You move down separate paths and you move on. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just change.
So, during the time you’ve got at home inbetween trips, make a conscious effort to maintain your relationships. Call friends you haven’t seen in a while and schedule a coffee date. Head out to engagement parties, and birthdays.
Make the most of this time with the important people in your life, because life is too short, and social connections are an important aspect of everyone’s life.
Write a Travel Blog
With all the experience you’ve had from traveling, why not put that spare time and energy into preserving your memories in a travel blog?
Starting a travel blog (much like this one) is a fantastic way to chronicle your journeys, though you can often also make solid money doing it. It may take time for your blog to gather an audience, so be willing to persevere with this venture!
A travel blog is a great asset to have on a personal level, as it acts like a diary that you can look back on and reminisce. And the act of writing can be a therapeutic way of getting through the period of time you have inbetween trips.
Relax and Unwind
So you’ve just got back from the most amazing adventure of a lifetime. I’m talking weeks skiing in the Alps, scaling and clambering up mountains in the northernmost parts of Scotland, hiking through Italy, or a month surfing down in Bali.
But then that age old maxim rings true. You need a vacation from your vacation. After you return home you’re drained, you’re grubby, your feet have developed huge callouses and blisters.
Relax already!
Globe-trotting can be exhausting, so instead of spending your time inbetween trips depressed that you’re not out traveling, make the most of your downtime to look after your health and mental wellbeing.
After-all, you can only truly enjoy your next adventure after you’ve recovered from your last, and sometimes that takes time. Take advantage of your time inbetween trips to relax, recharge, and build up excitement about the next one.
Remember that being on the go all the time can be mentally exhausting without you even knowing it.
